British-born actress Hannah Yelland made her Broadway debut less than a year ago in Brief Encounter as Laura Jesson, a 1930s housewife who unexpectedly falls for a stranger she meets on a train. Today, Yelland is attending the Tony Awards, where she is nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Play, an honour she shares with Nina Arianda, Frances McDormand, Liby Rabe, and the iconic Vanessa Redgrave. wings+horns S/S 2011

Gone are the days when only the wealthiest of men could afford to care about the make of their garments, the fit of their tailored goods or the feel of their fabric. The contemporary man is as fastidious as his aristocratic counterpart, and menswear is a booming, innovative industry. Today’s best lines build their following on fulfilling those age-old notions of quality and craftsmanship, and Wings+Horns stands out among them, but with an added utilitarian ethos.

Their design methodology has enabled them to achieve that perfect synergy between function, fit and finish. Established in 2004 in Vancouver by Craig Atkinson, Wings+Horns has recently welcomed a new designer, Davidson Manaloto, to its team. The Block caught up with him to speak about the brand, and his vision for its future.

Jewelry in the shape of the Evil Eye is a staple of dollar stores and hippie bazaars; paw through a table full of silver jewelry and tucked in amongst the snake rings, amber, and mood rings, you’re sure to find a few of these iconic, unblinking single eyes on rings, charms, or bracelets.

Charlotte Taylor F/W 2011

Charlotte Taylor is a young up-and-coming Lancashire-born, The Isle of Wight-based designer with a penchant for cute animals and grannie style. A graduate of Central Saint Martins, she cut her teeth working in marketing for Luella, where she learned about the other side of the fashion business. Following Luella’s fold in 2009, Taylor launched her own eponymous label, a process she famously documented on her blog, charlotte-taylor.blogspot.com. Declared “The One to Watch” by Vauxhall Fashion Scout, Taylor is indeed an exciting new name on the scene. With her F/W 2011 collection soon making its debut on this side of the pond, we caught up with the designer for a chat.

Wanted: Sultan Wash Sespa Homme

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

With the return of the summer sun comes the desire to adjust one’s seasonal attire. An item synonymous with warmer weather is the versatile, rope-soled espadrille shoe. Originally worn by 14th century peasants and soldiers in Catalonia, the espadrille has stood the test of time and found its way back into contemporary fashion. Taking an innovative perspective on the classic shoe is French brand Sultan Wash which infuses the aesthetic of a modern canvas sneaker with the traditional rope soles and shape of an espadrille to create their Sespa Homme shoe.
