After opening its doors in late 2009, Saturdays Surf NYC quickly became one of the new leaders of cool within the already busy fashion scene in New York. The SoHo based company is part coffee shop, part retail space, stocking supplies for the city’s surprisingly large surfing community, as well as a selection of brands such as Levis, Gitman Brothers Vintage and Baxter of California. Recently Saturdays has embarked on creating their own menswear label, transcending its surfing roots, and gaining further credibility in the realm of style and design. Case in point: their recent collaboration with renowned Japanese bag maker Porter. (more…)

wings+horns S/S 2011
Gone are the days when only the wealthiest of men could afford to care about the make of their garments, the fit of their tailored goods or the feel of their fabric. The contemporary man is as fastidious as his aristocratic counterpart, and menswear is a booming, innovative industry. Today’s best lines build their following on fulfilling those age-old notions of quality and craftsmanship, and Wings+Horns stands out among them, but with an added utilitarian ethos.
Their design methodology has enabled them to achieve that perfect synergy between function, fit and finish. Established in 2004 in Vancouver by Craig Atkinson, Wings+Horns has recently welcomed a new designer, Davidson Manaloto, to its team. The Block caught up with him to speak about the brand, and his vision for its future.

Charlotte Taylor F/W 2011
Charlotte Taylor is a young up-and-coming Lancashire-born, The Isle of Wight-based designer with a penchant for cute animals and grannie style. A graduate of Central Saint Martins, she cut her teeth working in marketing for Luella, where she learned about the other side of the fashion business. Following Luella’s fold in 2009, Taylor launched her own eponymous label, a process she famously documented on her blog, charlotte-taylor.blogspot.com. Declared “The One to Watch” by Vauxhall Fashion Scout, Taylor is indeed an exciting new name on the scene. With her F/W 2011 collection soon making its debut on this side of the pond, we caught up with the designer for a chat.

With the return of the summer sun comes the desire to adjust one’s seasonal attire. An item synonymous with warmer weather is the versatile, rope-soled espadrille shoe. Originally worn by 14th century peasants and soldiers in Catalonia, the espadrille has stood the test of time and found its way back into contemporary fashion. Taking an innovative perspective on the classic shoe is French brand Sultan Wash which infuses the aesthetic of a modern canvas sneaker with the traditional rope soles and shape of an espadrille to create their Sespa Homme shoe.
